Carmel Beach

Carmel Beach

Stroll a white-sand crescent on the Central Coast, two hours south of San Francisco

With its sugary sand and idyllic setting—edged by wind-carved cypress trees and bluffs topped with quaint cottages with billion-dollar views—this roughly mile-long crescent in Carmel-by-the-Sea is a great place to relax and play. Whether you’re looking to lounge with a good book, take a romantic stroll, or engage in active beach fun, there’s something for everyone at this strip of coast about two hours south of San Francisco.

What to Expect at Carmel Beach

For families, Carmel Beach is ideal. The fine, powdery sand is perfect for creating elaborate sculptures just above the surf line, and kids love to splash in the usually tame waves and explore the many tide pools. However, keep in mind that the ocean temperature here remains quite chilly year-round, hovering just below 60 degrees even in the summer. While wading is popular, only experienced swimmers or surfers in wetsuits should venture too far out, as rip currents can occasionally pose a hazard.

Dog-Friendly Carmel Beach

Carmel Beach isn’t just a paradise for people. This is a canine fun zone too—unlike many other coastal spots, this beach welcomes off-leash dogs as long as they are under voice control. You’ll see happy pups chasing tennis balls, splashing through the waves, and enjoying a social scene that’s as much fun for their humans as it is for them. The relaxed, pet-friendly atmosphere makes it a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Carmel Beach Weather

The beach’s climate varies throughout the year. Fog is common, especially in the months from May through August, casting a mystical beauty over the landscape. However, patience often rewards visitors with the sun peeking through later in the day. Fall and winter bring clear, crisp conditions that are perfect for a peaceful walk along the shore or a sunset picnic. As the evening sets in, bonfires are permitted in designated areas, creating a cozy setting for roasting marshmallows and enjoying the ocean breeze.

Parking at Carmel Beach

Due to its popularity, parking can be challenging, particularly on summer weekends. The official parking lot near Ocean Avenue fills up quickly, so visitors may need to seek street parking in the surrounding neighborhoods. Arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon can improve your chances of finding a spot with ease.

Things to Do Near Carmel Beach

For those looking to explore beyond the main beach, Carmel River State Beach lies a bit farther south. This lesser-known gem features silky sand dunes and a serene lagoon, making it a fantastic option for birdwatching. Marbled godwits, brown pelicans, tiny sanderlings, and black oystercatchers, recognizable by their striking fire-engine-red bills, are all familiar to the area. Kayaking is also popular here, as the calmer waters provide a more tranquil experience compared to the open ocean.
