How to Splurge or Save in Temecula

Highfliers and budget-savvy sippers alike can indulge in SoCal’s wine country

Tucked between San Diego and Los AngelesTemecula is a town full of surprises. From strolling Old Town to sipping bold reds at hillside vineyards, this Inland Empire gem balances laid-back charm with modern-day luxury. Visitors can unwind at boutique inns or all-in-one winery resorts, try their luck at a sprawling casino, or explore the area’s rugged natural landscape on foot, horseback, or hot-air balloon. Whether you’re a high roller or want an affordable getaway in the Golden State, here’s how to savor the best of Temecula.

Where to stay in Temecula

Splurge: There are several full-service resorts in Temecula Valley wine country, but seek a private retreat for a truly luxe stay. The eight-bedroom, five-acre Vaquero Resort offers the best of both worlds with a fully-equipped estate and vineyards stretching across five acres with sweeping views just 10 minutes from Old Town Temecula. Up to 16 guests can be accommodated at this rental property, which includes access to your own infinity pool and swim-up bar, bocce ball court, putting green, and sport court (seasonal pricing, from $1,289 to $4,000 per night with minimum stay requirements).

Save: Budget-conscious travelers may opt for a well-known chain to rack up some loyalty points. The Embassy Suites by Hilton puts you within a 15-minute drive of more than a dozen wineries, with rooms as low as $103. Every stay includes a free hot breakfast, a nightly evening reception with complimentary drinks and light appetizers, and Wi-Fi.

Where to have a memorable meal

Splurge: Temecula is a burgeoning culinary destination with a diverse selection of food and wine options at varying price points. Get a taste of the town at Great Oak Steakhouse, where classic meat and seafood dishes are transformed with an upscale twist inside a glass-walled exhibition kitchen. Winner of Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence, this Pechanga Resort Casino restaurant serves an eight-course “Chef’s Table” tasting menu that’s crafted specifically for your group (from $1,440 for the table, minimum six guests), with optional sommelier-guided wine, spirit, and mocktail pairings available.

Save: A diner in Old Town offers an entirely different kind of meat-and-potatoes experience. Serving up slow-smoked, Texas-style fare, the Swing Inn Cafe & BBQ is known for its generous portions and house-made sauces and rubs. Order an extra-large brisket platter with Texas toast and a side of baked beans for $24, and you’ll have leftovers to spare. Oh, and did we mention it's owned by Breaking Bad actor and longtime Temecula resident Dean Norris? He recommends pairing the meal with his signature Schraderbräu beer.

Barrel tastings and budget-friendly pours

Splurge: When it comes to wine, make it an experience to remember. Play winemaker for the day at Bottaia Winery, which creates Italian-inspired varietals sourced from grapes grown in Temecula. Up to 10 people can participate in the winemaking process, which includes four tastings of varietals straight from the barrel and the chance to create three separate red blends ($135). Choose your favorite to bottle, cork, and age at home.

Save: Tasting in Temecula doesn’t need to break the bank. With the Priority Wine Pass, enjoy two-for-one tastings and discounts at more than a dozen wineries across the valley. You’ll save up to $25 at spots like Masia de la VinyaOak Mountain, and Danza del Sol along Temecula Valley’s De Portola, Calle Contento, and Rancho California wine trails.

Touring Temecula

Splurge: When you’re willing to splurge, the sky’s the limit for things to do in Temecula. Soar above the rolling hills and vineyards during a private flight with A Grape Escape Balloon Adventure ($799–$1,999 per couple, $1,399–$3,499 for up to 16 passengers). After a 60-minute scenic sunrise tour, sip a glass of chilled sparkling wine back on terra firma.

Save: If you prefer to keep two feet on solid ground, however, get your steps in with a two-and-a-half-hour Booze and Boos walking tour of Old Town Temecula (from $29.95). You’ll hear spooky ghost stories along the historic mile-long trail, with the option to purchase your own brews and spirits at each bar stop.

Where to tee off in style

SplurgeGolfing is a popular pastime in Temecula, which has around 20 courses within a 15-mile radius. A standout among them is Journey at Pechanga, a par-72 championship course designed by famed architect Arthur Hills. The course is open to the public and offers links-style play on 18 holes that wind around the property’s grove of ancient oak trees, with challenging water features and elevation changes set against a mountain backdrop.

Save: For a steal, tee off at Temecula Creek Golf Club, where 18 holes runs under $40. There are three nine-hole courses to choose from, each offering different features like oak-lined fairways, open layouts, and dramatic bends that require precise control.

Where to unwind

Splurge: When you’re ready to relax, treat yourself to a wellness experience at South Coast Winery Resort & Spa. Its GrapeSeed Bliss package is a 130-minute indulgence that includes a citrus body polish, massage infusion, and facial enriched with vitamins and botanicals, plus two glasses of wine ($455).

Save: A classic pedicure will also do the trick if you’re on a budget. Treat your tired toes to a polish and 10-minute foot massage at Old Town Nails & Spa ($27). Additional services like sugar scrubs and paraffin treatments can be added à la carte starting at $7.
