Stop 1

Palm Springs

901 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs

Head northeast from San Diego to the Greater Palm Springs area, where your definition of “sports” can include tennis, golf, shopping, or lounging by the pool. The La Quinta Resort & Club takes its role as a desert oasis quite seriously. After all, this jewel in Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria collection features 41 magnificent pools within its manicured grounds. The 781-room resort dates back to 1926 and has plenty of stories to tell: For instance, this is reportedly where Frank Capra wrote It’s a Wonderful Life. Anyone can feel like an A-lister here, thanks to the five championship golf courses, the spa, tennis courts, and easy access to shopping, from Old Old Town La Quinta to Palm Desert’s El Paseo. The resort also makes an elegant base camp for desert hikes, including the 5-mile Cove to Lake Trail, or the challenging, 7.5-mile Boo Hoff Trail.

Palm Springs Movie Locations

277 N Avenida Caballeros, Palm Springs

Drive west from the desert to Orange County, and the über-family-friendly hub of  Anaheim. Scoring a centrally located place to stay is key to making the most of a few days here, and the Hilton Anaheim – Disneyland® Resort is located just one mile from the gates of Disneyland® Resort. You can either walk to the parks from your hotel or catch the no-hassle shuttle that picks you up right outside the lobby. The Hilton Anaheim is a Disneyland® Resort Good Neighbor hotel, and it is also one of the Southern California hotels where guests who book their special offer will have the opportunity to save on single-day and multi-day Disneyland® Resort Park Hopper tickets. The kid-friendly hotel has two pools, including one just for grownups who are ready for a little downtime. The shops, eateries, and public art of the Anaheim GardenWalk are next door, while the vibrant dining scene at the Anaheim Packing District is a short drive away.

Stop 3

Twentynine Palms

6136 Adobe Rd, Twentynine Palms

You might know the desert city of Twentynine Palms as the place to pick up the Roadrunner shuttle bus into Joshua Tree National Park. Or maybe you know it as the home of Sky’s the Limit Observatory and Nature Center or the world’s largest Marine Corps training base. But in recent years, the town has attracted a diverse community of artists who make their homes among the sprawling Mojave Desert. The 29 Palms Art Gallery is housed in a rustic adobe at the Oasis of Mara. It showcases the work of the local artists’ guild, hosts exhibitions, and sells desert-themed artwork. The 29 Palms Creative Center offers classes and studio time in pottery-making and painting for artists of all levels. The town’s most unusual art center is the Glass Outhouse Gallery, which hosts monthly art receptions and yes, has a real glass outhouse. To see a different kind of visual art, head to Smith’s Ranch Drive-in, one of the last original drive-in movie theaters, showing films to popcorn-eating car passengers since 1954.
